In February 2025, a group of more than 25 women gathered in a living room because one woman was tired of crying on her couch alone. She craved a community of like-hearted people to come together and talk about what we can do…together…in these troubled times. We are now a growing group of educators, counselors, healthcare professionals, government servant leaders, regular people who are parents, friends, neighbors, dedicated citizens, and now, nonviolent political activists.
Around coffee and a circle of chairs, we began by reading a motivational poem for grounding. Do Not Lose Heart, We Were Made for These Times by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. See it here.
We each introduced ourselves by sharing our name, career and our ‘why’ for wanting to become active. Within a brief time, we were connected and motivated to continue exploring “what do we want to do now.”
The name L.A.C.E. originally stood for Ladies Action Committe (LaCE), and yet we knew it could be broader and more inclusive than that. We are now:
Local Action. Community Engagement.
Since that first day, we’ve gotten busy. Supporting other actions and groups in the Mesa County community, such as Indivisible marches and rallies, the Western Colorado Days of Action (WCDOA) and Black Citizens and Friends Juneteenth celebration. We hosted a community block party in April and raised a literal ton of donations for our community food banks. We led a May Day march through downtown.
We helped rally the vote for School Board candidates for the November 2025 election, flipping two seats and adding to the remarkable voter turnout. The Daily Sentinel reported these numbers:
Mesa County saw a voter turnout rate of 44.11%, as there are 118,017 active voters in the county. Per the Secretary of State’s office, Mesa County’s turnout outpaced the state’s turnout, as Colorado as a whole saw 35% voter turnout with 1.45 million ballots cast out of 4.13 million active voters.
